Daphne Caruana Galizia

1964–2017 · Anti-corruption reporting, Malta

Malta's most-read investigative journalist, who used Panama Papers material to expose ministerial offshore holdings. Assassinated by car bomb in October 2017. A 2021 public inquiry found the Maltese state bore responsibility for creating the climate of impunity around her. Her sons' foundation now pursues her cases and protects journalists under threat worldwide. (No free portrait of Daphne herself exists — pictured: her memorial at the University of Malta.)
