Safe surfing for women and teenage girls: honey traps, sextortion, and purpose-first internet

First: none of this is your fault
Every scam in this guide works by manufacturing trust and urgency — the shame victims feel is part of the trap design, especially in sextortion, where silence is the product being sold. If something has already happened, skip to If it already happened first. The rest can wait.
The four traps aimed at women and girls
- Romance / honey traps. Weeks of affection from a stranger — then a request: money for an emergency, intimate photos, or "investment" tips. The playbook matches matrimonial fraud: affection first, urgency later, video calls always "impossible".
- Fake opportunities. Modelling shoots, work-from-home jobs, scholarships, and contest wins that need "registration fees", revealing photos, or video "auditions" over chat. Real employers audition in offices, pay you, and never recruit through flattery.
- Image misuse and sextortion. Pressure for intimate images, secretly recorded video calls, or AI-edited ("nudify") photos of fully-clothed pictures — followed by blackmail threats to send them to family. Know this: paying never ends it; it marks you as someone who pays.
- Friend-and-follower harvesting. Fake profiles (often stolen photos of real women) that collect your friends list, routine, and location tags — the reconnaissance for every other trap.
Purpose-based surfing: the master habit
Most traps need time and attention to work — weeks of chatting, gradual boundary-pushing. Purpose-first internet use starves them:
- Decide before you open: "I am here to study Chapter 4 / order groceries / message Priya." When the purpose is done, close the app.
- Strangers earn nothing by default: no friend requests from unknown people, no DMs answered, no personal details (school, routine, location) in bios or stories.
- Never send intimate images to anyone, ever — not partners, not "agencies", not apps that promise deletion. Screenshots, cloud backups, and AI editing defeat every promise.
- Video-call rule: keep the camera off with strangers; anyone legitimate accepts that.
Devices: genuine software only
- Genuine OS + updates, apps only from the Play Store / App Store — cracked apps and "free followers" tools are infostealer delivery vehicles (see identity hijack).
- Keep the built-in antivirus/firewall on; add a reputable mobile security app if you want, but no banner ad's "virus warning" is ever real.
- App permissions audit monthly: why does that photo editor need contacts and microphone?
- Private photos: locked folders, no auto-backup to shared family cloud accounts.
If it already happened
- Stop, screenshot, preserve — evidence first: profiles, chats, numbers, transaction IDs.
- Do not pay. Ever. It escalates demands.
- Block, then report: in-app report, then cybercrime.gov.in (women/children reporting available) and 1930. For non-consensual intimate images, also report to StopNCII.org, which hashes images so platforms block reshares.
- Tell one trusted person today. Isolation is the blackmailer's leverage; a parent, teacher, or counsellor breaks it instantly.
